Bookbinding – more butterfly books
July 11, 2009
Two butterfly (cho) books, one bound, one not yet bound. They are vehicles for copperplate calligraphy which I was studying at the time; both are on archival high-quality bookbinding paper. The larger unbound is a sonnet by Petrarch – Italian on one side, an English translation on the other. It will end up with a very unconventional-shaped cover. The smaller bound one has a poem on one side and coloured pencil drawings of flowers on the other. They’re not purely Japanese of course, but a modern interpretation of Japanese traditional structures, as taught to me by master bookbinder Daphne Dobyn.
